Charging at Public Charging Stations: Frequently asked questions

Here you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about charging your Porsche at public charging stations.

The charging stations of the Porsche Charging Service result in significantly more charging points. This is because one charging station can consist of multiple charging points, as charging points are counted based on the number of charging connectors. Therefore, if a charging station has two connectors for two cars, it counts as two charging points.

The dynamic status of the charging points is displayed in the My Porsche app and in the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system of the car. The status shows how many charging stations are available for use and how many charging points exist at the location.

This can be clearly illustrated using a specific example:

If the status ‘4/4’ is displayed, then this means that there are 4 charging stations with 4 charging points available.

If a charging station is reported as ‘out of service’, the number of charging stations displayed is reduced and the app shows ‘3/3’.

In the details you will then find the charging point with the display ‘Out of service’.

If all charging stations report ‘out of service’, this location is not displayed in the My Porsche app. Alternatives are immediately visible on the map.

Here’s how the availability of charging stations is displayed in the app:

If the charging session does not start, it may be due to a communication error between your car and the charging station:

If you come across a charging station in the EU with outdated software it could potentially happen that you experience difficulties. In this case before switching to a different charging station you can activate the Compatibility Mode in the PCM and try to charge again. This mode allows you to charge at incompatible charging stations, which means the encryption between the car and the charging station will be suspended during the establishment of communication with the charging station. Please note: During this time, the Plug & Charge function is not available. On car restart or upon engaging a driving gear, the Compatibility Mode turns off automatically.

Before activating the Compatibility Mode, make sure that charging cable isn’t plugged in and follow these steps:

In your PCM: Home > Charging > Settings icon.Tap Compatibility Mode.Start the charging process manually.

Alternatively, you can turn on compatibility mode by pressing and holding the release button (B) at the car charge port for 3 seconds.

Country-specific stipulations and approvals may restrict the use of charging equipment abroad. Please consult your Driver’s Manual or contact your Porsche Centre to learn if your charging equipment is suitable for the country you intend to visit or if you need additional equipment.

No, do not use extension cables, cable reels, multiple sockets or travel adapters to charge your car. You can purchase the appropriate connecting cables or plugs for this from a Porsche Centre in the relevant country.

No, once the charging plug is inserted into the vehicle charge port, it is automatically detected by the car and locked. The charging cable can’t be disconnected and your Porsche is secure from being driven away.

This might be due to the charging station being offline and not transmitting any current data. In this case, you can end the charging session in your app manually or just ignore it. Only the actual charging time recorded at the charging station is considered for invoicing.
