Why some charging stations don’t reach maximum speed

This article applies to:

Taycan 2020–present

Macan Electric 2024–present

What is the model year of my Porsche?

Charging your Porsche at a charging station has been designed to be fast and easy. However, sometimes you might notice the charging speed is slower than expected. Several factors can influence the charging speed at a station. This article will cover several of the most common.

Factors that can influence charging speeds

Power Sharing Among Multiple Chargers

Many charging stations are equipped to allow several vehicles to connect and charge from the same power source at the same time. When this happens, charging speed can be slower for each vehicle.

800-Volt vs. 400-Volt DC Fast Charging Stations

Porsche electric vehicles use advanced 800-volt battery technology and can reach their maximum charging capacity only at DC fast charging stations that support 800 volts.

At an 800-volt DC fast charging station, a Taycan can charge from 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in 18 minutes, (1) achieving a maximum charging speed of up to 320 kW. (2)

The Macan Electric can charge from 10% to 80% SoC in 21 minutes, with a maximum charging speed of up to 270 kW. (3)

When charging at stations that support only 400 volts, your Porsche can charge from 10% to 80% SoC in 33 minutes, reaching a maximum charging speed of 150 kW for the Taycan and 135 kW for the Macan Electric.

Taycan (MY2020 - 2024) without the optional On-Board 150 kW DC Charger will reach a maximum charging speed of 50 kW. Actual charging speeds will vary.

(1): Charging time for direct current (DC) with maximum charging power from 10% SoC to up to 80% SoC under optimal conditions (CCS fast E-Station with > 320 kW, > 850 V, battery temperature 73°F and initial SoC 9%).

(2): With Performance Battery Plus.

(3): Charging time for direct current (DC) with maximum charging power from 10% SoC to up to 80% SoC under optimal conditions (CCS fast E-Station with > 320 kW, > 850 V, battery temperature 77°F and initial SoC 9%).

Grid and Station Limitations

The local electrical grid, or the charging stations, may have limits on the maximum power it can deliver during a set time. This can be due to infrastructure constraints or grid conditions, especially during peak demand.

Cable and Connector Quality

Both the quality and condition of the charging cable and connector can affect your charging speed. When damaged or worn, cables may not support the maximum current.

Station Usage and Queueing

Popular charging stations with high usage or wait times can lead to reduced charging speeds or wait times, affecting your experience.

Vehicle Battery State and Temperature

Your charging speed can depend heavily on your vehicle’s battery state of charge (SOC) and temperature. Batteries charge fastest when they are at a low to medium state of charge and in an optimal temperature range. If your battery is near full or too hot/cold, your charging speed will be reduced to protect your battery.

How to optimize your charging experience

Use the Porsche Charging Planner to help plan your routes. When you do this, your Porsche will start preconditioning your battery to reach an optimal temperature by the time you arrive at the charging station.Use the My Porsche app to find less busy stations or those with higher power availability. Avoid charging your battery when it’s nearly full if you want to maximize your charging speed.
