How to optimise the service life of your Porsche battery

The battery is the heart of your Porsche electric car. To maintain its full performance and range over many years, it’s important to pay attention to a few basic factors.

Lithium-ion batteries are subject to a physical and chemical ageing and wear process. But with the right charging habits, and a little extra care, you can significantly extend the service life of your battery.

Checklist: Porsche electric car charging dos and don'ts

Dos

Use the Porsche Charging Planner in your My Porsche app and the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system to optimise travel and charging times. Activating the Porsche Charging Planner will ensure your battery is brought to the optimum temperature before arriving at the charging station. The optimum battery temperature for short charging times is around 30-35°C. Ideally, fast charging should be started at a State of Charge (SoC) of less than 10% in order to achieve charging capacities of up to 270 kW. If possible, only charge up to 80% SoC, as the charging speed is throttled beyond this by the overvoltage protection. This is possible in three different ways:
Set a charging profile via the My Porsche app or the PCM. You can find the instructions here.Activate the battery conservation function in your car. You can find the instructions here in the owner's manual.Track the charge status of your car manually via the My Porsche app and end the charging process manually after reaching 80%.
Overnight charging at home enables a maximum state of charge (SoC) in the morning. To do this, activate your Porsche departure timer with the desired charge level and departure time. Activating a departure timer in your My Porsche app or via your PCM enables preconditioning of the car (battery and interior temperature). Activating the Battery-saving charging function in your PCM minimises charging losses. You can find more information here in the owner's manual.

Don’ts

Avoid charging a cold or already full battery (if possible, not above 80%) at fast-charging stations, as the charging power is low in these cases and can have a negative impact on your battery life. If possible, do not charge above 80% SoC, as the remaining 20% takes disproportionately more time and can have a negative impact on battery life. Do not drive to fast-charging stations without active destination guidance in order to prevent the battery temperature from being too low and having a negative impact on battery life.Avoid long charging times at the household socket. Avoid deep discharging of the battery to below 5%.

Practical tips on how to extend the battery life of your Porsche electric car

Optimum state of charge between 20% and 80%. Only charge your car to 100% if it’s absolutely necessary – for example before long journeys. For everyday use, it’s sufficient to charge the battery to 80%. By activating the energy-saving mode for your battery, you have the option of automatically setting the target charge value to 80% within the My Porsche app or your PCM. You can find more information on activating energy-saving mode here in the owner's manual. Why it's important: A charge level between 20% and 80% ensures that the battery is less stressed and lasts longer as chemical stress is minimised. Avoid frequent fast charging. Only use fast-charging options when it’s absolutely necessary and instead use slower, regular charging of your car overnight or during longer downtimes. Why it's important: Fast charging is practical for long distances, but frequent fast charging causes the battery to heat up more, which can shorten the life of the battery over a longer period of time. Use the Battery-saving charging function. Activate the Battery-saving charging function during longer stops at fast-charging stations to limit the charging power to approx. 200 kW and protect the battery. Why it's important: The Battery-saving charging function allows you to minimise charging losses and limit the charging power during longer breaks. This protects your battery and extends its service life. You can find more information here in the owner's manual. Use the Porsche Charging Planner. Use the Porsche Charging Planner in the My Porsche app or your PCM – even if you know the route you are driving – as it ensures that the battery is brought to the ideal temperature of around 35°C before charging. Further information on using the Porsche Charging Planner can be found here. Why it's important: The Porsche Charging Planner and the Porsche Intelligent Range Manager optimise the charging conditions and route planning in order to make the best possible use of the battery. In addition, the battery is brought to the most favourable temperature in good time before a charging facility is approached. A battery temperature of approx. 35°C is ideal for the shortest possible charging time. Activate the departure timer before driving off. Use the departure timer regularly, especially in extreme weather conditions, to ensure that the battery is at the optimum temperature before setting off. Information about the Porsche departure timer can be found here. Why it's important: By activating a departure timer, the battery and interior temperature of your Porsche are preconditioned to the most battery-friendly temperature, which improves charging efficiency and reduces wear. Protect your Porsche from extreme temperatures. Avoid parking your car in direct sunlight or extreme cold for long periods of time. An ambient temperature between 0-20°C is ideal. Why it's important: High temperatures accelerate the chemical wear of your battery, while extreme cold reduces charging capacity and efficiency.

Frequently asked questions and answers

The lower the battery level at the start of the charging process, the faster charging can take place. The best charging speeds are achieved with an SoC below 10% and a warm battery (approx. 35°C).

If you are not in a hurry, it’s advisable to activate the Battery-saving charging function on the PCM. This function limits the charging power at suitable charging stations, such as the IONITY fast-charging stations, to around 200 kW, which extends the service life of the battery and reduces charging losses. You can find more information here in the owner's manual.

For physical and chemical reasons, the charging speed decreases as soon as the battery approaches its full capacity. It’s therefore generally advisable to charge the battery to around 80% SoC or the required range during DC fast charging.

If the car is parked for more than two weeks, it should ideally be kept at an ambient temperature of between 0-20°C. The battery charge level should be kept between 20% and 50% during this time. You can find more information here in the owner's manual.

In winter, charging performance can be impaired by low temperatures. It’s advisable to warm up the battery before charging in order to improve charging efficiency and achieve a longer range. To automatically precondition your car while driving, use the Porsche Charging Planner via the navigation system. You can read how to activate it here. When charging at home, it makes sense to set a charging timer so that your car is charged until you leave so that it preheats the battery.

In high temperatures, the battery can heat up excessively, which accelerates ageing. To avoid this, the car should be parked in the shade if possible or the temperature control system should be used to actively cool the battery.
