What does the 2G/3G network shutdown mean for my Porsche?

Mobile network operators in Europe will start phasing out 2G and 3G networks from 2026. Switzerland already shut down the 2G network in 2023 and will shut down the 3G network as of January 1, 2026. The shutdown will affect not just cars registered in Switzerland, but also all cars that dial into Swiss mobile networks.

Porsche is relying on 4G/LTE and 5G technologies for its latest model series and is also supporting the migration to these networks for other models. Nevertheless, the connected car services (e.g., breakdown call, parking position, vehicle status, remote lock/unlock) of some Porsche cars are currently still based on 2G and 3G networks.

Porsche Connect Services

Porsche has already begun developing a solution that will allow customers of the affected models to continue using the connected functions and services even after the 2G and 3G networks have been shut down. The solution will be available for all models except the Cayenne E3 model year J, K and L (production date: 2018 up to calendar week 25/2020; see ‘affected models’ below), with details to be announced at a later date. The solution will be provided as a car software update either over-the-air or via Porsche dealers. Customers will need to check the date of manufacture of their car to determine the applicable update method.

Unfortunately, owners of Cayenne cars from model year J, K and L (production date: from 2018 up to calendar week 25/2020 – see ‘affected models’ below) will not be able to continue using all connected functions and services (with the exception of Infotainment Online) after the 2G and 3G networks are shut down, as it’s not technically feasible to implement a corresponding solution.

eCall (Emergency Call function)

The shutdown of the 2G and 3G networks also affects the eCall (Emergency Call) function. A solution for all other cars is currently being developed. This solution will also be made available as a car software update either via Porsche dealers or over the air. Unfortunately, the eCall function will no longer be available for owners of Cayenne cars from model year J, K and L (production date: 2018 up to calendar week 25/2020; see ‘affected models’ below), and no further measures are planned in this regard.

Frequently asked questions

2G and 3G are the generations of mobile networks that are currently still being operated by many mobile network operators (MNOs). In many ways, 2G and 3G formed the basis for mobile broadband, which supports voice and data services.

Mobile networks use a physically limited radio spectrum. Once a network generation has fully utilised the available spectrum (such as 2G and 3G), no further expansion is possible. By shutting down 2G/3G, mobile network operators can convert this spectrum to faster 5G technology.

Porsche Connect functions require a mobile network connection. Depending on the age of the car, the pre-installed SIM card in certain cars uses the 2G/3G network for voice and data services.

Yes, by setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot (e.g., via your smartphone), you can continue to use certain Connect services that are no longer accessible via the mobile network after the 2G/3G networks have been switched off. The car connects to the Internet via the hotspot.

However, this option is only available for certain services and only works as long as there is an active Wi-Fi connection. Examples of services that remain available via Wi-Fi include Infotainment Online, such as weather and news information, navigation services with real-time traffic information, and online searches for points of interest. For more details on setting up the Wi-Fi hotspot, please check the owner's manual for your car. You can also use the online owner's manual at manual.porsche.com.

All cars affected by the network shutdown will remain roadworthy and eligible for registration even after the 2G/3G networks have been shut down.

The shutdown will affect not only cars registered in Switzerland, but also all cars that connect to Swiss mobile networks – for example, customers who live in border regions or travel to Switzerland with their cars.

The My Porsche app will remain usable on your smartphone. For affected cars that cannot be updated, the shutdown may affect the car connection. As a result, certain functions of the app that require an active connection to the car, such as locking and unlocking the car via the app, will not be operational.

The auxiliary heating system can still be operated as usual in the car. For cars that cannot be updated, remote control of the auxiliary heating system via the My Porsche app will no longer be possible due to the shutdown of the networks.

For most affected Porsche models, functionality can be restored with an update. No technology upgrade will be offered for cars that cannot be updated, which were equipped with the latest technology at the time of production. The decision to shut down the 2G/3G networks was made exclusively by local mobile network providers and is beyond our control.
